Shows to Binge

After teaching 6th graders all day and giving directions, answering the same question a thousand times, pulling small groups, grading essays, tutoring after school, running book club, etc, etc, etc, I am all about relaxing in front of the TV. Netflix is great because there are no commercials and you can watch back to back to back (to back) episodes. Here are my favorite shows on Netflix and ones I recommend to binge on:

Friends: Okay, so this is probably a very cliche first choice but I can’t help it. Friends is tied up there for my favorite show and I can watch it over and over again. I love that the episodes are only 20 minutes without commercials and I love that even though the show ended over 10 years ago, it’s still just as funny. I’ve probably watched the series in it’s entirety three or four times. It’s the perfect show to have on in the background when doing some work or laundry. I’m fairly certain most have seen at least a couple episodes, but do yourself a favor and start at the very beginning!

Unknown-1

Friday Night Lights: Friday Night Lights is tied with Friends as my favorite show. This is one that I recommend to literally everyone because it has something that everyone could like. There is a lot of depth to each of the characters and storylines and it does it’s job so well that you’ll be wanting to live in Texas before long. While the show is about football, it’s not necessarily ABOUT football (if that makes sense… ). Give it a whirl for an episode or two and you’ll be hooked! Side note: Michael and my dad both love this show. I have very different taste than them in TV, yet we all still watched this one!

Unknown-2

Broadchurch: SO SO SO GOOD! This British show has two seasons and each is only about 10 episodes which means that you will fly right through. The first season investigates the disappearance and murder of a young boy and everyone in the small village is a suspect. You find out who the killer is at the end of the season and the second season follows the trial of said person. This, behind FNL, is the one I recommend the most to people. It’ll keep you guessing until the very end (and then probably infuriate you).

Unknown-1

The Office: You can’t go wrong with The Office! Like Friends, this is one that is, at this point, easy to have on in the background while I’m doing something else. I don’t work at a typical “office” but this is exactly how I picture it to be… or wish it was! Jim and Pam are my favorite (would you expect anything else?) and as much as I like my principal, I wouldn’t mind Michael Scott stepping in for the day. One person I can do without? Dwight. I know, I said it.

Unknown-3

Gossip Girl: Two words: Chuck Bass. My college roomies and I loved watching this one together. If you love drama, fashion, and New York City, this one is for you! As always with these teen dramas, it’s very unrealistic but I think thats why it’s also really fun.

Unknown

Pretty Little Liars: This one will take commitment on your part to make it through but I guarantee you’ll like it if you do! If you love a good mystery (we are in the last half of the final season and STILL DON’T KNOW WHO A IS!), PLL is for you. The show can be very tween-y at times (and extremely unrealistic) but it’s kept me hooked for 7 seasons so it must be doing something right! The season ends in several weeks and I am probably going to re-watch again at some point to see if I can pick up on any clues along the way.

New Girl: I admit, I am not up to date on New Girl but do enjoy it when I need a break from more intense shows (see below 😉 ). Jessica Day’s quirkiness can get a wee bit annoying at times, but her wardrobe certainly makes up for it. And I’m pretty sure Schmitt makes me laugh about 10 times every episode.

Unknown-1

Some other good ones are: Stranger Things, Hart of Dixie, Grey’s Anatomy, Master of None, Freaks and Geeks, and One Tree Hill.

Also, here are some documentaries that you should check out: Making a Murderer, Amanda Knox, Blackfish, 13th, and Planet Earth.

What shows are on your Netflix list?

Life Lately

I haven’t posted in about a week because I’ve been extremely busy/tried and really haven’t had a whole lot I need to say! Here are some things that I’ve been up to lately:

We moved into our new school on Monday! I posted about it earlier in the week so you can check that out if you want to see some pictures. The kids have been absolutely crazy this week. Is it a full moon or something? (Yes, I believe in the power of a full moon!) Hopefully once they get more settled in, they will calm back down a bit. I have my last formal observation next week so I am a little anxious for that. I’ve learned though that I can plan, plan, plan and things will still happen that I can’t account for. I’m happy with my evaluation scores so far so hopefully the last one will be just as strong.

Yes, I am still coughing. The cough tipped me off to something else though and I’ve had several doctor’s appointments with a couple more to come in the next few weeks. Perhaps I will share after I get more news but for now, any positive thoughts are appreciated!

Honestly, that’s about it. I’ve been so tired after work that I watch a television show* or two, read for a bit (on book 2 for March! would be 3 but it was boring), and am asleep by 9pm. Talk about old lady! Michael and I are still working very opposite hours. Some days he doesn’t start until around 3pm! I’m off at 3:45 so our work hours barely even overlap. His April schedule is much better though; it all depends on what shows he’s working on. He’s been working weekends too, so I have been out in Corona a lot. I am okay with the drive (beats 5 hours from Arizona) and it means I get to have a slumber party with Pippa! Stay tuned for a Pippa post next week– she’s turning ONE!!

And a few things I am looking forward to? Tricia is in town next week! She is visiting LA with the Igwe clan but she carved out some time to see me. We are going to hang out at Pump because where else would we go? We had such a fun time there over the summer that a repeat trip is necessary. Spring break is also about a month away and I cannot wait. It’ll be busy… cruise to start it off and then right to SF. I will have a few days once those two trips are done to just relax and gear up for the last couple months of the school year.

What have you been up to lately? I hope you have a great weekend!

*Most of what I watch is reality tv (Bachelor finale on Monday! Both of those girls deserve better than Nick…), but the one show I do not miss each week is This Is Us. Seriously, this show. I don’t know how a show can make you feel so many emotions in 40 minutes. I think I text Whitney the same text every week… something like “omg. I can’t!” or “noooo.”  Everyone in my family watches. Even my dad, so you know it’s good. If you haven’t seen it yet, check your OnDemand and get going! The last episode of the season is next Tuesday and if it’s about what I think it’s about, I may need to use the note that Milo shared on his Twitter:

Social Media Sensation

the_bachelor_casting_header

I always look forward to Mondays. Not because the work week starts again and not because I have to set my alarm again after two days of sleeping in, but because it’s Bachelor Monday! I’ve watched every season of the Bachelor, Bachelorette, Bachelor Pad, and Bachelor in Paradise. To say it is my guilty pleasure is an understatement! My family can make fun of me all they want and Michael can roll his eyes at me when I ask him to record it for me (I don’t have cable so I need to mooch!), but I don’t care. They are the ones missing out! I’ve wanted to do a Bachelor post for awhile now but didn’t know what I’d write. That changed last night!

I signed up for Twitter about a year ago to follow some of my favorite celebrities. I follow 160 people, have 35 followers, and have basically only retweeted articles I want to come back to and tweets about books that I need to remember. Once in a while I tweet about the Bachelor while watching and use #TheBachelor hashtag so that Bachelor Nation can see my tweet and appreciate my humor. Usually this results in about one or two people liking it.

Michael is out of town so instead of mooching off of his cable, I had to mooch off my parent’s satellite and watch last night’s episode on my computer. I tweeted one thing and it just blew up! Even as I am writing this, almost 24 hours later, I’m still getting notifications on my phone. And the kicker is that I even spelled the contestant’s (okay, this makes The Bachelor sound like a game show when it is definitely NOT!) name wrong! Twitter doesn’t let you edit posts so I had to leave it. So apparently people who tweet don’t care about proper spelling because currently it has 353 retweets and 1,551 likes. My mom said I was a social media sensation. You can see the tweet below in all it’s glory. Not bad for someone who still only has 35 followers!

Kids These Days

I don’t know how I got to be 30. Time seems to have blurred and sped up because 30 used to be this far off number. Teaching doesn’t really help either with making me feel any more youthful. My current students are 11/12 which means they were born in the 00s– 2004/2005 to be exact. How on earth was I a senior in high school when these kids were born?! And how are the first graders that I taught during my student teaching now in 8th grade? I’m not getting any older, how are they?!

My kids are highly amused about the fact that I didn’t have a cell phone until I was 16. I try to explain to them that um, cell phones weren’t really a thing back then (ugh see, I’m referring to what seems like 5 years ago as “back then”!). And all the apps they use now? Nope! Even, texting wasn’t really a thing until I was in college. It baffles them. But really, I think they are the ones that really miss out…

They’ll never know about…

1. Disney Channel Original Movies: I don’t watch the Disney Channel anymore so while unknownthere may be some movies still on, I know they have nothing on “Smart House” and “Rip Girls” and “Zenon.” (My co-workers and I recently talked about these movies and it was funny to see how super excited we all got when naming them).

unknown-32. The Oregon Trail: What a masterpiece of a game. My kids will never know how fun it was to go into the school computer lab filled with HUGE computers (think of the floppy disk days), name your wagon crew, and work tirelessly to make sure that they all make it safely to Oregon.

3. Skating rink parties: Maybe I’m off on this one but I don’t know if my students even unknown-4know what a skating rink is. This definitely makes me sad because the rink provided, hands down, the best birthday parties! Throw on some good jams and I could skate with my friends for hours (or until they brought out that limbo pole).

unknown-14. *N SYNC (and other boy bands): I recently played some music in class while my kids were working and *N SYNC came on. I asked my kids if anyone knew who it was. Or if they knew what band Justin Timberlake used to be in. Blank stares. It made my heart so sad. And then I proceeded to play more *N SYNC so that they could learn to fully appreciate 90s boy bands. The work of a teacher just never ends.

I know this is a super short list of things our poor youth will never know. What else would you add to it?

Dillon, Here I Come!

I love a good Buzzfeed quiz. I also love a good Buzzfeed quiz that involves some of my favorite TV dramas! And I especially love a good Buzzfeed quiz that tells me that the show I should live in is Friday Night Lights which just so happens to be MY FAVORITE SHOW EVER! I always knew I belonged in Dillon, Texas with Coach Taylor, Tami, Tim Riggins, and Tyra!

screen-shot-2017-02-08-at-5-19-39-pm

I refuse to take it again and mess up my results just to see what other shows I could have ended up in, so I’ll leave that to you! Take the quiz here and let me know what TV show you should live in!

Weekend, Come Back!

This past weekend was so much fun! Steph had texted me a few weeks ago saying she was going to be in LA for work and asked if we could make it a mini-roomie weekend seeing that it was perfect timing with the Zags playing Pepperdine. I convinced Whitney to join the mini-reunion too, but unfortunately Jess was going to be out of town for work. Here are a few gems from our weekend! I love impromptu trips, especially ones with these gals!

img_2549

I love South Pasadena. Whitney and I drove through and looked at some houses and spotted this adorable Free Little Library. We were checking out Zillow as we drove through the neighborhoods and it’s probably safe to say that I won’t be a homeowner in South Pasadena anytime soon ($$$).

Happy hour at PUMP was a must. Colin (above) was our bartender the last time we went during roomie weekend and he recognized us right when we walked in (good? bad?). We had reservations at SUR (we made it this time!) and the food was definitely lacking- I think you’re paying for the chance to potentially see someone from the show. If you are ever in town and want the Vanderpump experience, skip SUR and just hang out at PUMP. Tell Colin that the four horsemen told you to swing by!

We headed up to Malibu on Saturday for the Zags game against Pepperdine. We hung with other Zag fans and alumni at a restaurant near by before heading up to the game. I’m confident to say that there was probably an equal number of Zags fan in attendance! We won (here’s hoping we are #1 today!) and headed back home for pizza and One Tree Hill.

The weather on Sunday was PERFECT! Last time the girls were here we hiked up to Griffith Observatory so this time I decided to take them to Eaton Canyon where the views are just as great. We headed to brunch afterwards, had some fro yo (earned because of the hike), and got to the airport with not a second to spare!

The next roomie weekend is already in the planning process. Spokane? Destination?

What’s Up Wednesday!

whatsupwednesday1

I read Mix and Match Mama’s blog every morning and today I am linking up with her and other bloggers for my first ever What’s Up Wednesday! Enjoy!

What I’m Eating this Week:

chocoloate_chip_off_the_ol_block_final_grande_large_3f185041-b70f-44d6-a57f-306e68093dc9_large

If you love cookie dough like me, you NEED this! I got the Chocolate Chip Off the Ol’ Block and Birthday Bash in my Christmas stocking and let me tell you, once you open it up, it’ll be gone. I am kind of embarrassed to admit that I finished the first one in two sittings. It’s all going to the same place eventually though, right?

What I’m Reminiscing About:

I’m not sure I’m really reminiscing about anything lately but I do think a lot about where I am now and where I was a year ago. I cannot even put into words how much happier I am. I am back home in California, driving distance from my family, in the same city as Michael for the first time in three years, and at a job I LOVE with co-workers who I enjoy! It’s crazy how much can change in a year!

What I’m Loving:

homeland.jpg

Michael and I are binge-watching Homeland and I love having a show to watch together. We have very different tastes in television and while I can get him to watch The Bachelor and Vanderpump Rules with me, they’re not his fave. We both highly recommend if you haven’t seen it!

What I’ve Been up to:

I’ve just been up to normal life. Nothing too interesting.

What I’m Dreading:

I’m not dreading anything at the moment!

What I’m Working on:

I am currently in the process of finding someplace in LA to volunteer. I have a few places in mind but infortunately, with my schedule, the weekends are really the only time I can volunteer. I’ll keep you posted on what I find!

What I’m Excited About:

Spring break (teacher perk!) is still a ways away but I have some fun plans in the works! Michael and I are heading up to San Francisco for a few days to celebrate his birthday and I am also going on a cruise with my co-workers (organized by our admin!)! We are doing a 3-day cruise to Ensenada. I’ll get back the morning of Michael and I’s flight to SF so it’ll be a bit of a rush but I am glad I get to do both trips!

What I’m Watching/Reading:

scientology

What I’ve really been enjoying lately is Leah Remini’s Scientology and the Aftermath. I’ve always been extremely fascinated with Scientology and I am the shocked emoji during every episode of this mini-series. My heart breaks learning of the individuals’ stories. I hope the continued coverage and the conversation that Remini and Mike Rinder, another former Scientologist, started will make people aware of the atrocities of this so-called “religion.” Also, I highly recommend Remini’s book if you haven’t read it!

I have a couple books downloaded and ready to go on my Kindle but I haven’t started them yet. I have such good intentions to read every night before I go to sleep but I’m an old lady and it doesn’t always happen. The Zookeeper’s Wife is next on my list… I need to read it before the movie comes out!

What I’m Listening to:

joshua-radin

I love me some Joshua Radin and I get to see him play at the Troubadour tonight! He was previously scheduled to play here last fall but the concert was canceled for some reason.  He also has a new album out this week so be sure to check it out!

What I’m Wearing:

barre_blk_1024x1024.jpg

My mom got me this shirt in my stocking for Christmas and I wore it to Barre for the first time last week. I got a couple compliments!

What I’m Doing This Weekend:

roomieweekend

My college roomies, Whitney and Steph, are in town! Steph is in LA for work and I recruited the rest of the roomies so that we could have a mini-reunion. Unfortunately, Jess won’t be joining us. On the agenda is happy hour at Pump, dinner at Sur, and the Gonzaga game versus Pepperdine. The picture above is from our last LA roomie weekend in November! We had so much fun on the WB Studios tour!

What I’m Looking Forward to Next Month:

Kelley and James are coming home for a visit!

What Else is New:

Umm, I think we covered it all!
